Regulating Rhythms

In the first two journals, I explored how our nervous system responds and why feeling safe is more than knowing we are safe.

In my final journal, I wanted to turn towards nervous system regulation, not as something we force the body to do, but as something we can gently support through rhythm, sound and relationship.

And breathe…

Social media is full of nervous system tips, hacks and ways to breathe ourselves towards calm and regulation. If only regulation were that simple.

Breathing is one of the body’s natural rhythms, with us from our first breath until our last. As we breathe in, the diaphragm moves down and the chest expands, drawing air into the lungs. As we breathe out, the diaphragm relaxes and air moves out again.

The nervous system adjusts this rhythm all the time. Breathing becomes faster with effort, slows during rest and becomes less regular when we speak, laugh or cry. It is also shaped by pain, illness, fear and emotion. Breathing is unusual because the brainstem keeps it going automatically, yet we can also consciously change its rhythm and depth.

As popular as breathing exercises are, they are not always the best place to begin. When someone already feels breathless or overwhelmed, being told to take a deep breath can lead to feelings of hyperventilation and a sense of panic and dysregulation. Repeated deep breaths can lead to over breathing, leaving us dizzy, tingly, feeling faint and even more short of breath.

Focusing inside the body can be difficult too. Paying close attention to every breath, and counting, holding or controlling the breath may make sensations such as panic feel stronger. The effect can be the opposite of what we hoped for, leaving us feeling worse than when we started and more dysregulated.

Breathing practices can be helpful when they feel comfortable, chosen and suited to our current state. But we may need to begin somewhere else, somewhere that feels a little safer.

Something to move with

The body is full of rhythms: heartbeat, breathing, movement, sleeping and waking. We are surrounded by rhythm too, in music, birdsong, moving water, footsteps, familiar voices and the sounds of our pets.

Rhythm gives shape to what comes next. A repeated sound or movement can offer something steady and predictable when our inner experience feels anything but steady.

Sound also gives us somewhere gentle and outside ourselves to place our attention. A familiar voice, a gentle pulse, humming or music can help us orient, connect and begin to notice change without having to explain or control what is happening.

Why the nervous system responds to rhythm

The nervous system continually receives information through sound. It is sensitive to rhythm, pace, pitch, tone, intensity, repetition and silence. It also reads the emotional qualities of a voice: whether it feels warm or sharp, hurried or safe.

Our brains look for patterns and anticipate what may happen next. Rhythm gives sound structure in time. As a pulse or phrase repeats, the nervous system can attune to its timing and predict what follows. Even when we are still, hearing a beat involves networks linked with attention and movement. This can give breathing, movement and alertness an external pattern to organise around.

An ancient human resource

Our nervous system’s relationship with rhythm and sound is far older than our language for the nervous system. Across cultures, lullabies, humming, chanting, drumming and song have helped people soothe, energise, mourn, celebrate and connect. They can also support movement, expression and belonging.

How repetition can shape change

The nervous system learns through experience, and the good news is, it has the capacity to change, or neuroplasticity. Repeated, familiar safe experiences help it build new expectations. When we use these principles with sound or music, such as SSP Together, these cues of safety, when carefully supported in session, act as repeated experiences of safety. Over time, these experiences can reduce uncertainty and build familiarity, and the nervous system can learn that it can be open and flexible to the rise and fall within these rhythms. This rise and fall is similar to how the nervous system moves through states. And it is this flexibility that supports a healthier nervous system that is capable of curiosity, openness, choice and felt safety.

Change may appear in small ways: a little less bracing, jaw and shoulder softening, feeling present, finding access to words and clear thoughts and feeling safe enough to be close with someone.

Sound as a supported experience

Sound can influence arousal, breathing and heart rate, but it has no single effect. A sudden or unpredictable sound may mobilise us; a steady pulse or familiar voice may help us remain present. Tempo, volume, memory, culture and our current state all shape the response. Familiar does not always mean safe: a well known sound may carry difficult associations.

This is why a sound-based intervention is more than playing relaxing music. How safely and how well it works depends on how the sound is received, and on the practitioner’s understanding of the nervous system and how to use sound well. An experienced professional can notice responses, adjust the pace, volume or listening time, and protect the choice to pause or stop at any time. Sound provides the pattern. Responsive support is what turns it into something therapeutic.

Regulation is not one exercise or a demand to become calm. Rhythm offers pattern, variation, anticipation and return. Music can provide the structure, while a carefully paced professional relationship helps repeated experiences become a foundation for greater flexibility, connection and choice.

We started this series with the wonders of the nervous system, and regulation reminds us of this wonder: that a system built to protect us can also learn, through rhythm, sound and relationship, that it can feel safe enough to connect, and to grow.
